Additives to Avoid

With so many additives administered into foods, we can only provide a list of the more serious ones that should try and be avoided. Here are a list of the more common ones and their uses along with some of the unwanted effects associated with them.

E954
It is widely used as a sweetener, found in diet and sugarless products.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer has concluded that saccharin could be carcinogenic to humans.

Allura Red AC
E129
It is widely used as a food colouring in snacks, sauces, preserves, soups, wine, cider, etc. ..
Avoid it if your child has asthma, rhinitis (including hay fever) and urticaria (an allergic skin rash).

Avoid it if your child has asthma rhinitis, hives and other allergies.
It has been banned in the U.S. ..

Aspartame
E951
It is widely used as a sweetener in snacks, sweets, desserts, ‘diet’ foods.
It can affect people with phenylketonuria. Recent reports show the occurrence of headache, blindness and seizures due to the intake of aspartame in high doses and for long periods.

Benzoic Acid
E210
It is widely used as a preservative in many foods, including drinks, low-sugar products, cereals and meats.
Can temporarily inhibit the function of digestive enzymes and may deplete levels of glycine. Should be avoided by those with allergy problems such as hay fever, hives and asthma.

Brilliant Black BN
It is widely used in beverages, sauces, snacks and cheese.
Should be avoided by those with allergy problems, asthma, rhinitis, urticaria, etc. ..

Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA)
E320
It is widely used as a preservative, especially in foods that contain fat, such as meats and chocolates.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (International Agency for Research on Cancer) has demonstrated that there is a possibility that BHA is a carcinogen to humans. Also BHA interacts with nitrites to form chemicals that are mutagenic (ie cause changes to cell DNA).

Calcium benzoate
E213
It is widely used as a preservative in many foods, including drinks, low-sugar products, cereals and meats.
Can temporarily inhibit the function of digestive enzymes and may deplete levels of the amino acid glycine. Should be avoided by those with hay fever, hives and asthma.

Calcium sulphite
E226
It is widely used as a preservative in a wide variety of products – from burgers to biscuits.
In the United States sulphites are banned from many foods, including meat. A preservative makes older products seem fresh. They can cause bronchial problems, flushing of the skin, low blood pressure, tingling, and anaphylactic shock. The International Labour Organisation (ILO) recommends anyone suffering from bronchial asthma, cardiovascular problems, respiratory or emphysema to avoid this product.

Monosodium glutamate
E621
It is widely used as a flavour enhancer.
People who are sensitive to monosodium glutamate have felt its effects, including head pressure, seizures, chest pain, headaches, nausea, as well as burning sensations in the face. Many baby food producers have stopped adding MSG to their products.

Ponceau 4R
E124
It is widely used as a colourant.
Anyone who suffers from asthma, rhinitis or urticaria may experience a worsening of symptoms after consuming food containing this dye.

Potassium benzoate
E212
see calcium benzoate (as above).

Potassium nitrate
E249
It is widely used as a preservative in cured meats and canned foods.
Can decrease the oxygen transport capacity of the blood, can be combined with other substances to form nitrosamines, which are carcinogens, and may have an effect on the adrenal glands.

Para-hydroxybenzoate, propyl paraben, propyl paraben
E216
It is widely used as a preservative in cereals, snacks, pate, meats and chocolates.
The parabens have been identified as the cause of  chronic dermatitis in many situations.

Sodium metabisulphite
E223
It is widely used as a preservative and antioxidant.
May cause severe and potentially fatal asthma – a woman developed severe asthma after eating a salad with a dressing of vinegar containing E223.

Sodium sulphite
E221
It is widely used as a preservative in the manufacture of wine and other processed foods.
Sulphites are associated with asthma attacks. Most asthmatics are sensitive to sulphites in food.

Tin chloride
E512
It is a widely used antioxidant and colour retention agent in canned and bottled juices and fruit.
There have been reported cases of acute poisoning after ingestion of fruit juices containing tin concentrations above 250 mg / l –  causing nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and headache.

Sulphur dioxide
E220
It is widely used as a preservative.
The sulphur dioxide reacts with a variety of substances found in food, including various essential vitamins, minerals, enzymes and essential fatty acids. The most common adverse reactions to sulphites have been bronchial problems, especially those who are prone to asthma. Other adverse reactions include hypotension (low blood pressure), flushing, tingling sensations and anaphylactic shock. The ILO says you should avoid E220 if you suffer from conjunctivitis, bronchitis, emphysema, bronchial asthma or cardiovascular disease.

Sunset Yellow FCF
E110
It is widely used as a colourant.
Animal studies Indicate growth retardation and severe weight loss. People with asthma, rhinitis or urticaria should avoid this product.

Tartrazine
E102
It is widely used as a yellow dye in food.
What you need to know:it can cause allergic reactions in about 15 per cent of the population. Can be a cause of asthmatic attacks and has been associated with the occurrence of hyperactivity disorders in children. Those who suffer from asthma, rhinitis and urticaria may experience a worsening of symptoms after ingestion.
