Additives to Avoid

With so many additives administered into foods, we can only provide a list of the more serious ones that should try and be avoided. Here are a list of the more common ones and their uses along with some of the unwanted effects associated with them.

E954 
It is widely used as a sweetener, found in diet and sugarless products.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer has concluded that saccharin could be carcinogenic to humans.

Allura Red AC
E129 
It is widely used as a food colouring in snacks, sauces, preserves, soups, wine, cider, etc. ..
Avoid it if your child has asthma, rhinitis (including hay fever) and urticaria (an allergic skin rash).

Amarante
E123
It is widely used as a food colouring in jams, jellies and cake decorations.
Avoid it if your child has asthma rhinitis, hives and other allergies.
It has been banned in the U.S. ..

Aspartame
E951 
It is widely used as a sweetener in snacks, sweets, desserts, ‘diet’ foods.
It can affect people with phenylketonuria. Recent reports show the occurrence of headache, blindness and seizures due to the intake of aspartame in high doses and for long periods.

Benzoic Acid
E210
It is widely used as a preservative in many foods, including drinks, low-sugar products, cereals and meats.
Can temporarily inhibit the function of digestive enzymes and may deplete levels of glycine. Should be avoided by those with allergy problems such as hay fever, hives and asthma.

Brilliant Black BN
It is widely used in beverages, sauces, snacks and cheese.
Should be avoided by those with allergy problems, asthma, rhinitis, urticaria, etc. ..

Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA)
E320 
It is widely used as a preservative, especially in foods that contain fat, such as meats and chocolates.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (International Agency for Research on Cancer) has demonstrated that there is a possibility that BHA is a carcinogen to humans. Also BHA interacts with nitrites to form chemicals that are mutagenic (ie cause changes to cell DNA).

Calcium benzoate

It is widely used as a flavour enhancer.

The parabens have been identified as the cause of  chronic dermatitis in many situations.

Sodium metabisulphite

It is widely used as a preservative and antioxidant.

Sodium sulphite

It is widely used as a preservative in the manufacture of wine and other processed foods.
Sulphites are associated with asthma attacks. Most asthmatics are sensitive to sulphites in food.

It is a widely used antioxidant and colour retention agent in canned and bottled juices and fruit.
There have been reported cases of acute poisoning after ingestion of fruit juices containing tin concentrations above 250 mg / l –  causing nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and headache.

Sulphur dioxide

It is widely used as a preservative.
The sulphur dioxide reacts with a variety of substances found in food, including various essential vitamins, minerals, enzymes and essential fatty acids. The most common adverse reactions to sulphites have been bronchial problems, especially those who are prone to asthma. Other adverse reactions include hypotension (low blood pressure), flushing, tingling sensations and anaphylactic shock. The ILO says you should avoid E220 if you suffer from conjunctivitis, bronchitis, emphysema, bronchial asthma or cardiovascular disease.
